Standing Feet vs Hanging Storage: What Works Long Term

Care GuideNov 02, 2026·928 words

Standing feet are for posing, not for storage. If a doll is going to stay put for more than a day, lie it flat or hang it properly — standing it for weeks is the most common way people permanently deform a perfectly good doll.

This confuses people because standing feet are included free on our bodies, so they assume standing is the intended resting position. It isn't. Here is what each option is actually for.

What standing feet are really for

Standing feet have three bolts through the sole that let the doll bear its own weight on a flat surface. They are included free on every TPE and silicone body we sell, and they are genuinely useful:

What they are not for is weeks of continuous load. Three small bolts carry the entire body weight through two small contact patches, and over time that does two things: it presses permanent concave dents into the soles, and it keeps the ankle and knee joints under constant tension. A 42 kg doll standing for a month will show it.

There is also a practical risk — a standing doll is a top-heavy object with a narrow base. One nudge and it falls, and a falling doll breaks fingers, toes and wrists.

Option 1: lying flat — the safe default

Put it on a bed under a sheet, in a wardrobe, or in a rolling under-bed box. This is the method that cannot really go wrong.

The one real drawback is space. A 168 cm doll lying flat occupies a full bed — which is exactly why people look at hanging next.

Option 2: hanging — the space saver, done properly

Hanging is the method most experienced owners end up with, and it is safe when the load goes through the right point. Done wrong it is the single fastest way to destroy a doll.

Hang from the neck bolt. The threaded neck connector is designed to take the doll's weight — it already carries the head, and a hanging bracket distributes through it. This is what a proper doll hanging bracket does, and we sell a movable rack with hanging kit for about $28.

Never hang from:

Two more things: hang it so the feet just clear the floor (a few centimetres). Hanging it a metre up makes it swing and puts all the stress in one place. And take it down periodically to check the contact points.

We wrote about the bracket itself in Hanging Bracket + SM.

Option 3: standing — with strict limits

Stand it for dressing, photography, or a few hours. Then put it back down. If you must leave it standing:

Weight reduction also makes every one of these methods easier, but on tall bodies only — see when it's actually worth it and the real weight of every height.

Whichever you choose, these still apply
